Stop the Clock: AI won’t fix a firm that hasn’t put its house in order

Reading time: < 1 minute
Shaun Jardine’s new book asks how law firms should price legal work when AI keeps shrinking the time it takes. Two of our founders are among the 17 experts he asked.

Stop the Clock is Shaun Jardine’s third book, after Ditch the Billable Hour! and Ditch & Switch. The argument is simple: if AI reduces the time legal work takes, pricing built on time has to change. To make the case he brought in 17 legal market experts, the people he calls the “Wise People”. Two of them are ours.

Aku Sorainen, senior partner at Sorainen and co-founder of Crespect, uses his chapter to argue something that will be unpopular in firms moving to fixed fees: do not stop measuring input. “Value pricing does not mean guessing.” Time can stop being the basis of the invoice long before it stops being useful as management information.

Karolina Šilingienė, co-founder and Chief Customer Success Officer at Crespect, starts somewhere else entirely: at the write-offs, discounts and staffing habits sitting unexamined in a firm’s own data. Her point is that AI can only work with the information it can reach, and that most firms still cannot describe what their relationship with a client looks like across the whole firm.

They were interviewed separately. Both chapters end up being about culture rather than technology, and about what a firm chooses to measure and reward.

The rest is in the book, alongside 15 other perspectives on moving from selling time to selling value.
